SKILLS
INTRODUCTION
Reading is one of the
most essential language skills for academic growth and lifelong learning. It is
not merely the act of recognizing words on a page, but a process of
understanding, interpreting, and critically engaging with written texts. For
engineering students in particular, reading proficiency is a cornerstone of
success, as it enables them to comprehend technical manuals, research articles,
project reports, and professional documents with accuracy and clarity.
Reading develops the
ability to access knowledge across disciplines and equips learners to keep pace
with the rapid growth of information in the digital era. It strengthens vocabulary,
enhances grammatical awareness, and cultivates critical thinking skills by
exposing learners to different writing styles, ideas, and perspectives. In
addition, strong reading skills promote better academic writing and effective
communication, as students learn to model their own expression on the clarity
and coherence they encounter in well-structured texts.
From a pedagogical
perspective, reading can be categorized into different types depending on the
purpose and strategy. Skimming is used to grasp the general idea of a text
quickly, while scanning helps locate specific details or data. Intensive
reading focuses on close analysis of language and meaning, whereas extensive
reading builds fluency and a love for reading by engaging with longer texts such
as novels, articles, or essays. Equally important is critical reading, which
trains students to evaluate arguments, detect bias, and form independent
judgments about what they read.
In professional life,
reading proficiency ensures that engineers and technologists remain updated
with the latest developments in their fields. Instructions, safety manuals,
project guidelines, and research findings all require careful reading. Thus,
reading is not only an academic requirement but also a professional necessity
that bridges classroom learning with workplace competence.
The exercises under
this skill will expose students to a variety of texts-academic passages,
technical articles, short essays, and professional materials-along with
comprehension questions designed to improve understanding, vocabulary, and
critical interpretation. By systematically practicing these activities,
students will develop into confident readers who can process information
effectively, evaluate ideas critically, and apply their learning in both
academic and professional contexts.
