SHORT STORIES

INTRODUCTION

Short stories are brief narratives that convey meaningful ideas through characters, events, and situations. Unlike long novels, short stories are simple, focused, and easy to follow, often ending with a moral or life lesson. For students, listening to short stories improves concentration, comprehension, imagination, and vocabulary. They also help in understanding human values such as honesty, teamwork, determination, and responsibility.

For engineering students, stories can be an effective way to connect real-life situations with academic and personal growth. The following five sample short stories are designed to inspire, motivate, and build listening and speaking skills.

Story 1: The Engineer and the Bridge

Once there was a young engineer who got his first project to design a small bridge in a village. The villagers doubted his ability because he was fresh from college. But the engineer worked hard, consulted his professors, and carefully applied what he had learned. When the bridge was completed, it not only connected two sides of the river but also connected the people's trust with modern education. The villagers praised him for his sincerity and skill.

Moral: Hard work and knowledge together build trust.

Story 2: The Power of Teamwork

Four engineering students had to complete a project within a short deadline. Instead of working together, each one kept delaying, thinking the others would do the work. Finally, they realized they had only one day left. They decided to divide the work and stayed up all night. Surprisingly, when they combined their efforts, the project turned out better than expected. They learned that if they had worked together from the beginning, they could have done it more efficiently.

Moral: Teamwork multiplies results and reduces stress.

Story 3: The Forgotten Notebook

A student was preparing for his final lab exam but forgot his record notebook in the hostel. He was very nervous, thinking the examiner would scold him. However, when he honestly explained the situation, the examiner allowed him to complete the experiment and submit the notebook later. The student realized that honesty and sincerity are valued more than excuses. From that day, he became more careful and responsible.

Moral: Honesty and responsibility bring respect.

Story 4: The Solar Idea

During an inter-college competition, one team presented a simple model of a solar-powered water heater. Many laughed at their “ordinary" idea while others presented fancy robots and complex circuits. But the judges appreciated the solar model for its practicality and low cost. It even won the first prize. The students understood that innovation is not about complexity but about usefulness to society.

Moral: True innovation solves real problems.

Story 5: The Two Friends and the Exam

Two friends prepared for the same exam. One studied regularly, while the other kept postponing, saying he would study during the last week. When the exam came, the first student wrote confidently, while the second one struggled and regretted wasting time. After the results, the second student promised never to procrastinate again and learned to balance his time wisely.

Moral: Consistency is the key to success.

Story 1: The Broken Laptop

Ravi was a hardworking engineering student who always relied on his laptop for everything-assignments, presentations, coding practice, and project reports. One evening, just before the deadline for submitting his project report, his laptop suddenly froze and refused to turn on. At first, Ravi panicked. His friends told him to give up, but Ravi was determined not to fail. He immediately went to his roommate and requested to use his system.

With the help of his friend, Ravi began rewriting his project report from memory. He stayed up all night, checking his notes, retyping the content, and preparing the necessary charts and diagrams. His eyes burned with fatigue, but his determination pushed him forward. By morning, the report was ready, and he submitted it on time.

The faculty appreciated Ravi's sincerity and dedication. They even praised his effort, saying that such determination will help him in his career. Ravi realized that life often throws unexpected challenges, but with perseverance and resourcefulness, no obstacle is too big to overcome.

One day, her professor announced that each student must deliver a short talk on "Renewable Energy" Anjali was nervous but did not want to miss the chance. She practiced every evening in her hostel room, speaking in front of a mirror. At first, she made mistakes, but slowly her confidence grew.

On the day of the presentation, her hands trembled, but she took a deep breath and began. To her surprise, her voice was clear and steady. She explained the concepts with clarity and even gave real-life examples of solar and wind energy. By the end of her speech, the entire class clapped loudly. The professor praised her for her courage.

From that day, Anjali realized that confidence comes when we face our fears. She began taking part in more discussions and became one of the active voices in her class.
