LISTENING SKILLS

INTRODUCTION

Listening is the cornerstone of effective communication. It is more than merely hearing words; it is an active process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken or non-verbal messages. As a receptive skill, listening plays a pivotal role in language acquisition and professional success. In academic and workplace contexts, the ability to comprehend spoken English accurately and quickly is essential for participating in lectures, presentations, discussions, meetings, interviews, and client interactions.

Effective listening is a skill that can be developed and refined through conscious effort and regular practice. It involves attention, interpretation, evaluation, and appropriate reaction. It also requires the listener to be sensitive to tone, accent, pace, stress, and pauses. In engineering and professional environments, where precise communication is crucial, poor listening can lead to misunderstandings, errors, and loss of productivity.

There are two main types of listening:

• Active Listening, where the listener is fully engaged, reflecting and responding thoughtfully.

• Passive Listening, where the listener hears the message but does not respond or process the information deeply.

Listening can also be intensive or extensive. Intensive listening focuses on specific details, often for accuracy (as in a technical talk or job instruction), while extensive listening aims at general understanding (as in a lecture or news broadcast).

The objectives of listening activities in this course are:

• To improve learners' ability to understand spoken English in varied contexts.

• To develop note-taking skills and comprehension strategies.

• To familiarize students with different accents and speech patterns.

• To foster active listening habits for academic and professional effectiveness.

In this section, students will engage in tasks such as listening to TV news, speeches, interviews, academic lectures, and professional conversations. Activities are designed to train learners to identify main ideas, supporting details, opinions, attitudes, and implied meanings.

Ultimately, mastering the skill of listening enhances one's overall communicative competence and contributes significantly to personal and professional growth.
