Speaking Skills

Agreeing shows that we accept or support someone's opinion, while disagreeing shows that we have a different opinion. Both are natural in communication, but the way we express them makes a big difference. Being polite and respectful is very important, especially when we disagree.

AGREEING AND DISAGREEING

 

INTRODUCTION

 

In everyday conversations, we often share our thoughts, ideas, and opinions. Sometimes we agree with others, and sometimes we disagree. Knowing how to express agreement and disagreement politely is an important part of communication. It helps us build good relationships, avoid conflicts, and show respect for others' views.

 

Agreeing shows that we accept or support someone's opinion, while disagreeing shows that we have a different opinion. Both are natural in communication, but the way we express them makes a big difference. Being polite and respectful is very important, especially when we disagree.

 

Examples of Agreeing

 

1. Strong Agreement

A: "English is very important for engineering students."

B: "Absolutely! I couldn't agree more."

2. Polite Agreement

A: "This book is really useful for grammar practice."

B: "Yes, you're right. It's very helpful."

3. Partial Agreement

A: "Online learning is better than classroom learning."

B: "I agree to some extent, but classroom learning has its own advantages."

 

Examples of Disagreeing

 

1. Polite Disagreement

A: "Watching TV is a waste of time."

B: "I see your point, but I think TV can be educational too."

2. Direct Disagreement (informal)

A: "Summer is the best season of the year."

B: "I don't think so. I prefer winter."

3. Strong Disagreement (formal but respectful)

A: "Technology has only negative effects on students."

B: "I'm afraid I don't agree with you. Technology has many positive effects as well."

 

Useful Expressions for Agreeing

• I agree with you.

• That's true.

• Exactly

• You're right.

• I couldn't agree more.

• That's a good point.

 

Useful Expressions for Disagreeing

• I see your point, but.....

• I don't really agree with that.

• I'm afraid I disagree.

• That's not how I see it.

• I respect your opinion, but I think differently.
