SENTENCE STRUCTURE

 

INTRODUCTION

 

What is Sentence Structure?

Sentence structure means how we put words together to make a complete sentence.

Every complete sentence must have:

1. A Subject - who or what the sentence is about.

2. A Predicate - what the subject does or what happens to the subject.

The way we join these parts and arrange them decides the type of sentence.

 

Types of Sentence Structure

 

1. Simple Sentence

• Has only one main idea (one independent clause).

• It can have a short or long subject and predicate, but there is only one complete thought.

Examples:

❖ The sun rises in the east. (One complete thought)

❖ Our class visited the science museum.

Quick Tip: If it has only one subject and one verb (main action), it's a simple sentence.

 

2. Compound Sentence

• Has two or more main ideas (two or more independent clauses).

• These ideas are joined by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) or a semicolon (;).

Examples:

• I like coffee, but my friend likes tea.

• We finished our project, and we submitted it on time.

Quick Tip: If you can split it into two separate sentences and they still make sense, it's a compound sentence.

 

3. Complex Sentence

• Has one main idea (independent clause) and at least one extra idea (dependent clause).

• The dependent clause starts with words like because, although, if, when, since, that, who, which.

Examples:

• I stayed at home because it was raining. (Main idea: I stayed at home; Extra idea: it was raining)

• The book that you gave me is interesting.

Quick Tip: If part of the sentence cannot stand alone, it's a dependent clause → it's a complex sentence.

 

4. Compound - Complex Sentence

• Has two or more main ideas and at least one extra idea.

• It's a mix of a compound and a complex sentence.

Examples:

• Although it was raining, we went to the park, and we enjoyed a picnic.

• She completed her homework, but she forgot to bring it because she left in a hurry.

Quick Tip: If you see two joining words (one from FANBOYS and one like because/when/although), it's usually a compound-complex sentence.

Direction:

Rewrite each of the following compound or complex sentences as a simple sentence without changing the meaning.

 

1 The rain stopped, and the players returned to the field.

4. She stayed at home as she was feeling sick.

5. The machine stopped working, but the lights were still on.

6. We visited the museum, and we took many photographs.

7. They cancelled the match because the ground was wet.

10. I called you because I needed some help.

11. The movie ended, and we went for dinner.

12. He stayed back as he had extra work to finish.

16. He left early since he had to catch the train.

17. I could not attend the seminar because I was unwell.

18. We booked the tickets, and we packed our bags.

19. The power went off, and the class was dismissed.

23. They invited me to the function, but I could not go.

24. We cancelled the trip because it started raining.

25. He stopped talking when the teacher entered.

26. The bell rang, and the students rushed out.

27. She joined the dance class because she loves music.

28. I looked for my keys, but I could not find them.

29. We stayed indoors as it was too hot outside.

30. He missed the meeting since he was on leave.

31. I read the newspaper, and I checked my emails.

32. She wore a raincoat because it was drizzling.

33. We postponed the exam as the hall was under repair.

34. I helped my friend, and he thanked me.

35. They moved to a new house because the old one was small.

36. I switched off the lights, and I locked the door.

37. She didn't join the trip since she had exams.

38. I stopped at the shop, and I bought some milk.

39. We went for a walk though it was cloudy.

40. He spoke softly so that the baby would not wake up.

41. The train arrived late because of the heavy rain.

42. I saved money, and I bought a new phone.

43. She could not answer the question because she was nervous.

44. I cleaned the kitchen, and I arranged the shelves.

45. They repaired the bridge as it was damaged.

46. He stayed in the library because he wanted to read.

47. We stopped playing when it became dark.

49. He studied hard, but he failed in the test.

50. We clapped loudly because the performance was excellent.

 

Section 2 - Conversion to Compound Sentences

Direction: Join each pair of simple sentences to make a compound sentence using an appropriate coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

 

1. We packed our bags. We left for the airport.

2. She likes swimming. She dislikes running.

3. I can start the meeting now. We can wait for the manager.

4. The day was hot. We went for a swim.

5. He studied hard. He scored good marks.

6. I looked for my pen. I could not find it.

7. The bell rang. The students went to class.

8. She loves painting. She also enjoys dancing.

9. I opened the window. Fresh air came in.

10. The sun was shining. We decided to go out.

11. He missed the bus. He reached late to class.

12. They went to the park. They played cricket.

13. I visited my uncle. I stayed there for two days.

14. She cooked dinner. She served it hot.

15. The project was difficult. We completed it on time.

16. We could watch a movie. We could go shopping.

17. I met him yesterday. We discussed the project.

18. He didn't answer my call. He sent me a message later.

19. The weather is pleasant. We should go for a picnic.

20. She read a book. She made notes from it.

21. I will call you. I will send you an email.

22. He washed the clothes. He hung them to dry.

23. The teacher asked a question. Nobody answered.

24. We saw the rainbow. We took pictures.

25. She bought fruits. She bought vegetables.

26. I can help you. You must ask for it.

27. They invited me to the wedding. I could not attend.

28. I wrote the assignment. I submitted it yesterday.

Section 3 - Conversion to Complex Sentences

Direction: Combine each pair of simple sentences to make a complex sentence using an appropriate subordinating conjunction (because, although, when, if, since, etc.).

 

1. She could not attend the party. She was feeling unwell.

2. I will finish my homework. I will play cricket.

3. He waited at the station. The train was late.

4. The road was slippery. It had rained all night.

5. She passed the exam. She worked very hard.

6. I could not answer the question. I was nervous.

7. He bought a new phone. His old one was stolen.

8. We enjoyed the picnic. It rained heavily.

9. The students listened carefully. The teacher explained the lesson.

10. She cannot drive. She is underage.

11. I stayed at home. It was raining.

12. He missed the bus. He woke up late.

13. I will call you. I reach home.

14. They postponed the meeting. The manager was absent.

Section 4 - Conversion to Compound - Complex Sentences

Direction: Expand the following compound or complex sentences to make them compound-complex sentences by adding another independent clause or dependent clause where appropriate.

 

1. I stayed at home because it was raining, and I read a book.

2. She completed her homework, but she forgot to bring it because she left in a hurry.

3. We went to the park, and we played football after the rain stopped.

4. Although the shop was closed, we waited outside, and we finally bought the groceries.

5. He studied hard because he wanted to get good marks, and he also took coaching classes.

6. The lights went out, but the fans kept running because the generator was on.

7. I called my friend because I needed help, but he was not at home.

8. The students listened carefully, and they took notes while the teacher explained the topic.

9. She baked a cake because it was her brother's birthday, and she decorated it with cream.
