TYPES
OF SENTENCES
INTRODUCTION
A sentence is a group
of words arranged in the correct order to express a complete
thought.
Every sentence has at
least:
• a Subject (who
or what the sentence is about), and
• a Predicate
(what is said about the subject).
A sentence always
begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark such as a full
stop (.), a question mark (?), or an exclamation mark (!).
Example:
The students are
writing their exams.
• Subject → The
students
• Predicate → are
writing their exams
Sentences can be
classified according to their purpose or function in communication. Each type
expresses a different intention of the speaker or writer.
The four main types
are:
• These sentences state a fact,
opinion, or idea.
• They end with a full stop (.).
• Declarative sentences
are the most common type used in everyday communication.
Examples:
• The library opens at
9 a.m.
• She is a brilliant
student.
• Our college has a
large auditorium.
Tip
for students: If a sentence gives information, it is
declarative.
• These sentences are
used to ask
questions.
• They end with a question mark
(?).
• Two types of
interrogatives are common:
1. Wh-type questions - Ask for specific information (who, what, when, where, why, how).
What is your name?
Where do you live?
2. Yes/No questions – Begin with a helping verb or modal auxiliary
(is, are, do,
does, did, can, will, may, etc.).
Are you ready for the
test?
Can you solve this
problem?
Tip
for students: If a sentence is asking something, it
is interrogative.
• These sentences give orders,
instructions, advice, or requests.
• They usually begin
with a verb (without a subject) and end with a full stop (.) or sometimes an exclamation
mark (!) if the command is strong.
• The subject
"you" is understood though not written.
Examples:
• Close the door. (Command)
• Please pass me the
pen. (Request)
• Work hard to achieve
success. (Advice)
Tip
for students: If a sentence tells you to do
something, it is imperative.
These sentences express strong
emotions such as joy, anger, surprise,
sorrow, or excitement.
They always end with an
exclamation
mark (!).
Examples:
• What a beautiful
garden!
• How exciting this
match is!
• Alas! We lost the
game.
Tin
for students: If a sentence shows strong feelings and
ends with "!", it is exclamatory.
Summary Table

• Declarative sentences
are used in reports,
essays, and academic writing.
• Interrogative
sentences are useful in interviews, surveys, and classroom questioning.
• Imperative sentences
appear in instructions,
manuals, and day-to-day commands.
• Exclamatory sentences
are common in creative
writing, conversations, and emotional expression.
By mastering these four
types, students will be able to express themselves
clearly, ask questions confidently, give instructions effectively, and convey
emotions accurately.
Read
the sentences and identify whether they are Declarative, Interrogative,
Imperative, or Exclamatory.
