Losses in a Transformer

In a transformer, there are no moving or rotating parts. Hence there is no friction and windage losses.

LOSSES IN A TRANSFORMER

 

In a transformer, there are no moving or rotating parts. Hence there is no friction and windage losses. The losses occur in transformer are

1. Core (or) Iron loss

2. Copper loss

 

1. Core (or) Iron Loss

It includes both Hysteresis loss and Eddy current loss.

Because of core flux remains constant for all loads, the core losses also remain constant

Hysteresis loss; Wh = ηB max1.6 f  VWatts

Eddy current loss, We = P B2max f2t2 Watts

The Hysteresis loss is minimized by using steel of high silicon content for the core and eddy current loss is minimized by using thin lamination of the core.

 

2. Copper Loss

This loss is due to the ohmic resistance of the transformer windings.

Total copper Loss = I12R1 + I22R2 = I12R01 = I22R02

Where,

I1 and I2 are primary and secondary currents R1 and R2 are primary and secondary winding resistance.
