DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENTIFIC TAMIL

There were three forms of Tamil namely Iyal, Isai and Drama. Time passed and changes began to come. In this world of science, we can no longer thrive and rise in the nuclear age with the three Tamils.

In this spinning rocket age, development is not possible without the support of science. So Tamil should be developed in the field of science.

The riches of science should be brought to Tamil. Along with Muthamizh, science should be added as the fourth Tamil and henceforth it should be called 'Nartamizh'.

So, V.S.Kulanthaisamy was engaged in the attempt of combining both Tamil and Science.

1. Scientific Tamil

Scientific tamil refers to the study of scientific education research, information exchange and other science-related intellectual activities.

2. Importance of Scientific Tamil

Everyone, especially students, need to know the innovations and scientific and non-scientific facts discovered in any corner of the world. Language should not be a barrier to this. Mother tongue education is much beneficial.

For those of us who have to live in harmony with the world, medium of instruction through mother tongue will be of great use. While learning through other languages and particularly through English language, the ideas are grasped and converted to mother tongue for understanding the matter. Many historical facts show that the thoughts produced by learning with the help of mother tongue are better. Therefore, it is true that learning and teaching in the mother tongue combined with life can produce excellent and tangible results.

Proofs

i) Since English is the mother tongue in many countries water of the world, information on all discoveries is readily available in English. So the development of the country is fast.

ii) In China, everything is instantly translated into their mother tongue and exchange information instantaneously.

iii) In many developed countries including Japan, all research papers published in English language are translated and presented in mother tongue. This eliminates the possibility of stagnation in research.

3. Need for Science Tamil

1. Studying Science and Technology in Tamil leads to a different understanding and leads to a different way of thinking.

2. It allows us to explore things in different dimensions and in different contexts.

3. It helps to develop understanding of the Tamil community.

4. It is required to develop the department related matters neglected by the English World.

5. Majority of people in Tamil Nadu get their basic education in Tamil. If these students want to know about science, technology, medicine, the information related to that field should be in Tamil language.

6. Understanding capacity will raise during learning and teaching of scientific Tamil for the students.

4. Utilization of Scientific Tamil for Students

Science subjects are taught in Tamil in schools and colleges. However, their study for employment and for the reason that they get the necessary scientific and research news only by studying in English. By memorizing scientific concepts without clearly understanding them, clarity of thought does not occur.

Therefore, the Govt should intervene and enact a law that all science disciplines including medicine and engineering should be taught in Tamil. For that, the government should provide employment guarantee to the students studying science through the Tamil channel.

5. Actions to be taken for the development of How scientific Tamil

1. Publication of Scientific research journals.

2. Organizing Annual science functions.

3. Publication of science picture story books to create science awareness among students.

4. Science Forums should be held in Tamil to disseminate scientific ideas.

5. Scientific concepts should be spread through sound and light programmes.

6. Scientific journals, Health journals, Science magazines, Cattle magazines, Kalaikathir, Developing agriculture should be published and science knowledge should be promoted.

7. Separate committees should be appointed for the science divisions and scientific terms published in various languages should be translated into Tamil and mandated to be used by all.

8. Systematic training courses should be instituted to inculcate interest among the students in computer- based Tamil medium education especially in science and professional subjects.

6. Development of Science Tamil in Various Fields

1. Science Tamil in Broadcasting

Sivapatha Sundaram developed Science Tamil in the field of broadcasting through radio. Apart from him B. P. Thirugnana Sambandar of Presidency College, B. K. Srinivasan, K. Arangasamy Iyengar of Annamalai University, P. Saravanan, R. Ramasamy, S. Sampath, K. Shanmuga Sundaram, Kaliya Perumal of Presidency College are worth mentioning.

2. Work of Journals in Science Tamil

The magazine of Kalaikathir has led to the growth of Science Tamil for more than a quarter of a Century.

The Coimbatore College of Home Science promotes the growth of Science Tamil by publishing a magazine called 'Vinjnanach Sudar'.

3. Science Tamil in Agriculture

S. K. Ganapathy Iyer, V. P. Subbaih Mudaliar, Kathiresan, Kanaka Kumari, Balaramaih, Captain Sevudiminathan, Gurusiromani and Uthamarayan wrote and published Science News related to Agriculture in Tamil.

Apart from them, K. Rajaram wrote and published the books Ocean, Fish, Rain, Good Water, Fire Stones, Aryabhatta, Air in Space and S. Subramaniam wrote and published the Science books Endless Travel, Suriyan Nila, Stars, Stories of the Sky, etc., in Tamil. They have also done translations in Tamil made them suitable for children.

4. Science Tamil in Economics

J. S. Ponnaih, C. Velayutham, K. S. Sonachalam, R. Sevachalam, J. C. Kumarappa (Gandhian Economics), R. K. Shanmugam Chettiar have deeply thought of and written about economics in Tamil. Tesini, P. P. Natarasan, I. T. Chithambaram (Rural Economics) have written economics news in Tamil.

5. Political Science Tamil

Rajaji, M. P. Sivagnanam, Anna, Nedunjezhian, Dinamani Sivaraman, S. S. Marisamy, V. Saminatha Sharma, J. Ramachandran, Principal, Presidency College (Political Organizations) wrote books on politics in Tamil.
