Register Renaming

Advanced ILP and Parallel Processing

Question: 1. Write a note on register renaming.

Register Renaming

• Register renaming is a hardware technique used in modern processors to eliminate false data dependencies and increase Instruction‒Level Parallelism (ILP). In many programs, the same architectural registers (such as R1, R2, etc.) are reused multiple times for different purposes. This reuse does not represent a true data dependency but can still cause unnecessary stalls in a pipelined processor. These conflicts are known as name dependencies, which include Write‒After‒Write (WAW) and Write‒After‒Read (WAR) hazards.

• To overcome these hazards, processors use register renaming, a technique in which the CPU dynamically allocates a larger set of physical registers and maps them to the architectural registers specified in the program. By providing each instruction with its own physical register, the processor ensures that instructions do not interfere with one another even if they refer to the same architectural register.

• In essence, the processor "renames" the register references made by instructions so that storage conflicts are avoided. This allows multiple instructions to execute simultaneously without waiting for earlier instructions to complete. Register renaming is usually implemented using a rename table, reservation stations, and a Reorder Buffer (ROB). Together, these structures keep track of renamed registers, preserve program order at the time of commitment and maintain precise exceptions.

• Register renaming is essential for enabling dynamic scheduling, out‒of‒order execution, and superscalar processing. By eliminating false dependencies, it significantly increases parallelism and improves overall CPU performance.
