Applied Physics I: Chapter 8: Applied Optics - Interference

Conditions for Interference

For interference to occur between two sources, the following conditions has to be satisfied.

CONDITIONS FOR INTERFERENCE

For interference to occur between two sources, the following conditions has to be satisfied.

1. There must be two sources which are coherent in nature (i.e) They must be same wavelength, frequency and amplitude.

2. The sources should have constant phase difference (or) zero phase difference.

3. The sources should be closer to each other and the distance between the sources and the screen must be larger.

4. For constructive interference (i.e) for bright fringes to appear, the path difference between the two waves which are interfering should babe equal to nλ.

Path Difference = nλ

5. For destructive interference (i.e) to get dark fringes.

Path Difference = (2n+1) λ/2

Special Case

When light is reflected from the surface of an optically denser medium like glass, a phase change of π (or) a path difference of λ/2 occurs and hence the path difference for the formation of Bright fringes and Dark fringes will be all reversed

i.e., The path difference Δ = (2n+1) λ/2 for bright fringes

and The path difference Δ=nλ for dark fringes.
