Engineering Applications of Optical Fibres

ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS OF OPTICAL FIBRES

 

1. Telecommunication

(i) It can be used in the long distance (or) long haul communication.

(ii) Because of its large bandwidth, large number of channels are handled for communication. i.e., a fibre optic telephone transmission system can handle more than thousands of voice channels.

(iii) It is used for signalling purposes.

 

2. Computer Networks

The fibres have the following applications in LAN (Local Area Network).

(i) Each computer on the network (known as USER) is connected to the rest of the computers by the optical wiring scheme called as bus topology, which is an application known as a fibre optic back bone. Hence fibre optics are used to have communications between computers, which will share the data and programs.

(ii) It is also used in connecting the computer with printer, workstation etc., (Peripherals can be shared)

(iii) It has applications in land based, Airborne, naval systems

(iv) In sophisticated multibeam radars, fibre optics play an excellent role in processing an extremely wide range of signal transmission.

 

3. Cable Television

Transmission of TV signals to houses are normally done with copper wires. In future, it may be replaced with optical fibres. Here the signals (analog form) are modulated by light and is converted to digital signal for transmission. The multiplexer is used in transmission end and a demultiplexer is used at the receiving end, so that the user can select the frequency of the signal which they want to watch on TV.

 

4. Delay lines

Fibres are used as wide band delay lines in microwave signal processing, particularly in 1 μm wavelength region, without attenuation of the signal.

 

5. Optical fibres are used as a sensor in the measurement of pressure, temperature, absence (or) presence of an object, etc.

 

6. It can also be used as a link between a remote sensor and a monitoring station.
