Applied Physics I: Chapter 2: Properties of Matter - Viscosity and Surface Tension

Viscosity

Definition, Explanation, Classification of viscous liquids

Viscosity or internal friction of the liquid is the property of a liquid by virtue of which the liquid opposes the relative motion between its different layers.

VISCOSITY

Definition:

Viscosity or internal friction of the liquid is the property of a liquid by virtue of which the liquid opposes the relative motion between its different layers.

Explanation:

When a liquid flows slowly and steadily over a fixed horizontal surface ((i.e) stream line flow) as shown in Fig.2.1, then the velocity of each layer of liquid increases with its distance from the fixed surface as shown.

Let us consider a layer AB of the liquid. The layer below AB moves slower than the layer above AB. The difference in velocity will give rise to internal friction.

As a result the fast moving layer tends to accelerate the slow moving layer and the slow moving layer tends to deaccelerate the fast moving layer. Thus a temporary resistance is offered by the liquids to the shearing stress called as viscosity.

Classification of viscous liquids:

In general the viscous liquids are classified into two types, viz.

(i) High viscous liquids: Thick liquids such as castor oil, honey, coal tar, glycerine etc. are examples for high viscous liquids.

(ii) Low viscous liquids: Thin liquids such as water, alcohal, spirit, kerosine, oil etc. are examples for low viscous liquids.
