Coefficient of viscosity

Definition: The coefficient of viscosity is defined as the tangential force per unit area required to maintain a unit velocity gradient.

COEFFICIENT OF VISCOSITY

 

Let us consider two layers AB and CD of a liquid moving with the velocities v and v+dv respectively from a fixed surface as shown in Fig.2.2.


Let 'dx' be the distance of separation between the two layers. Then

The velocity gradient is = dv/dx

According to Newton, the viscous force (F) acting tangentially on a layer of a liquid is directly proportional to

(i) F surface area (A) of the layer

(ii) F velocity gradient (dv/dx)

F ∝ A (dv/dx)


 (or)

 F = ‒ ηA (dv/dx)

where η is as constant for the liquid and is called as coefficient viscosity and this law is called as Newton's law of viscous flow in a stream line motion. The negative sign indicates that force is acting in the opposite direction of flow.

If A = 1;

dv/dx = 1

then F = ‒ η
