Properties of Matter ‒ Viscosity and Surface tension
INTRODUCTION
We
know liquids have many peculiar properties such as fluidity, viscosity, surface
tension, diffusion, evaporation, cohesion, adhesion etc., of which viscosity
plays a vital role in transportation of fluids, ketchup flow in industrial
processing, blood circulation, turbines, heat transfer and natural process such
as flow of lava in volcano, glacier movement etc.
Similarly,
the study of surface tension property in liquids also possess more importance
in our day to day activities such as droplet formation in rain, capillary
action in plants, insects walking on the water surface etc.
These
two properties together plays a key role in inkjet printing, polymer
manufacturing, paints, coatings etc.
In
this chapter let us discuss about the basics of viscosity and surface tension
along with an experimental method to determine the same in a simple manner.
