Statistical Description of Data

Once data is collected, we need to summarize and understand it before doing deeper analysis. This process is called statistical description of data.

Definition: Statistical description of data is a process of using numbers, tables and graphs to describe and summerize the main features of a dataset.

Purpose of statistical description

1. Simplify data: Large amount of data becomes easier to understand when summerized.

2. Find patterns: The data shows trends, patterns, similarities and differences.

3. Compare groups: It helps compare data between two or more categories.

4. Support decisions: Provides evidence for business or research decisions.

There are three main components of statistical description

1. Describing data using tables and graphs.

2. Describing data with averages.

3. Describing data with variability.
