INTRODUCTION
Our
Tamil Nadu has been building and using water structures like lakes, ponds,
puddles, dams and sluices for 2500 years. There are many names for these
structures in Sangam literature. They are Ilangi, Gayam, Keni, Kotagam, Madu,
Stream, Lake, Sluice.
Thus,
the fact that there are many names for water bodies in Tamil confirms that the
old Tamilians were famous for creating water bodies. They have been using,
maintaining and protecting them for over 2000 years. In the last 20-30 years,
we have lost much of them and we still continue to lose them. The existing
lakes, ponds and dams are continuously losing their capacity.
