Applied Chemistry I: UNIT 5: Batteries

Battery Materials

Battery materials refers to the various components that make up a battery.

BATTERY MATERIALS

Battery materials refers to the various components that make up a battery. It includes variety of components including anode, cathode, electrolyte and separator. These materials are vital for the performance, energy density and stability of batteries.

Common battery materials

I. Electrode materials

1. Lithium

Lithium is a critical component of lithium‒ion batteries, used in both the anode and cathode.

2. Cobalt

Cobalt is primarily used in the cathode of lithium‒ion batteries contributing to performance and life‒span.

3. Nickel

Nickel is another key material for cathodes, especially in electric vehicle batteries.

4. Lead

Lead is used in lead‒acid batteries, along with lead oxide and various electrolytes.

5. Zinc

Zinc is important component used mainly in dry cells along with electrolytes.

6. Manganese

Manganese is used to stabilize cathodes and enhance the performance in lithium‒ion batteries.

7. Copper

Copper is mainly used in batteries as a current collector.

8. Aluminium

Aluminium is the another current collector used in batteries and also for battery casings.

9. Graphite

Graphite is a common anode material used in Li‒ion batteries due to its high conductivity and low cost. It provides a conductive structure for lithium ions.

10. Lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2)

It is a common material in early lithium‒ion batteries, known for its high energy density.

11. Lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4)

It provides good thermal stability and is often used in combination with other materials.

12. Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC)

It is a widely used cathode material in electric vehicles due to its high energy density and power capabilities.

13. Lithium nickel cobalt aluminium oxide (NCA)

It is very good choice for higher energy density applications.

14. Lithium titanate (LTO)

It is preferred for its long cycle life and fast charging capabilities, but has a lower energy density.

II. Electrolytes

1. Dil H2SO4

Dilute sulphuric acid is the main acidic electrolyte used mainly in lead‒acid battery.

2. Organic solvents

Organic solvents like carbonate esters, nitriles and sulfonyls are commonly commonly used as electrolytes in lithium‒ion batteries.

3. Ionic liquids

Ammonium salts, imidazolium salts and other ionic liquids are also used as electrolytes.

4. Other substances

Mostly materials that allow ions to move between the electrodes are used as electrolytes. They may be liquid (or) gel.

III. Other materials

1. Steel

Steel is used for structural support and battery casings.

2. Silicon

Silicon is used in next‒generation anodes for higher energy density. But, faces challenges with volume expansion.

3. Gold

Gold is also used in some electronic applications, including batteries.

4. Oxides

Various metal oxides are used in cathodes such as lithium nickel cobalt aluminium (NCA) and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC).

5. Graphene

These are used as a conductive additives.
