BATTERY PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS

Battery performance parameters are the characteristics that describe how well a battery functions.

The main parameters include.

(i) Capacity

(ii) Voltage

(iii) Energy density

(iv) Power

(v) Cycle life

(vi) Self‒discharging rate

(vii) Internal resistance

These parameters help determine a battery's suitability for various applications and its life‒span.

Important parameters

1. Capacity

The amount of electrical charge, a battery can store and deliver, can be typically measured in ampere‒hours (Ah).

2. Voltage (V)

The electrical potential difference between the battery's terminals. It varies with the state of charge. It can be measured by multimeter.

3. Energy density

It is the amount of energy a battery can store relative to its size (or) weight.

4. Power density

The rate at which a battery can deliver energy. It is often expressed as watts (or) C‒rate.

5. Cycle‒life

Cycle‒life determines the number of charge and discharge cycles a battery can undergo before its capacity degrades significantly.

6. Self‒discharge rate

This is the rate at which a battery loses charge when not in use.

7. Internal resistance

The resistance within the battery that opposes the flow of current, affecting efficiency and potentially causing heat generation. Lower resistance provides better battery performance and response time.

8. State of charge (SOC)

The amount of charge remaining in the battery is expressed as a percentage of its total capacity.

9. Depth of discharge (DOD)

It is the percentage of a battery's capacity that has been discharged.

10. Charge efficiency

It is the ratio of energy output during discharge to energy input during charging.

11. Discharge rate (C‒rate)

It refers to how quickly its stored energy is released. 1C rate indicating a full discharge in one hour.

12. Safety

Factors like thermal run‒away, which can cause explosions (or) fires, are crucial safety considerations. So, avoid overcharging, over discharging and overloading

to prevent battery damage (or) potential hazards.

13. Temperature characteristics

The temperature has certain impact on the performance of batteries. Lower temperatures tend to reduce the battery's capacity and power output, while higher temperatures can accelerate self‒discharge rates and corrosion.

These parameters are vital for selecting the right battery for a specific application, optimizing performance and ensuring safe operation.
