Oscillations and Waves: Basic definitions

BASIC DEFINITIONS

 

1. Displacement:

The distance of the particle measured along the path of the motion from its equilibrium position, at a given instant is called displacement.

Displacement y = A sinωt

Where A is the Amplitude and ω is the angular velocity = 2π / T

 

2. Amplitude:

The Maximum distance covered by the body on either side of its mean position is called its Amplitude.

 

3. Time Period:

The smallest time required to complete one vibration (or) oscillation is known as time period.

Time period T = 2π/ω

(or) T = 2π / √[ Acceleration/ Displacement ]

(or) T = 2π / √[ Displacement / Acceleration ]

 

4. Frequency:

The number of oscillations (or) vibrations made by a body per second is known as frequency of oscillation. It is the reciprocal of the time period.

i.e., Frequency n= 1/T

 

5. Phase:

It is the physical quantity that express the instantaneous position and direction of motion of an oscillating system.
