Is it ethical to replace human workers with automation?

All human beings have to do some work or the other for their survival. But, not everyone gets the opportunity to work in a healthy environment. A decent employment leaves people with a good living environment, mental peace, confidence and a good social life. But even all the literate ones are not able to get a work in their field of interest or choice leading to mental health issues. Also, in the workplace, sometimes workers are forced to face discrimination due to gender or work conditions. In a recent statistical study, globally, nearly 12 billion working days are lost every year due to depression and anxiety among the workforce leading to a huge loss in productivity. Of late, particularly after Demonetization followed by Covid 19, more countries had to face economic recessions leading to job loss, reduced employment opportunities, financial instability, etc.

In this scenario, there is a surge in the usage of robots in almost all the areas of work. There is a rapid advancement in technology in automation, engineering, artificial intelligence, etc. that is transforming the capacity of robots. In many sectors, many humans are in the threshold of losing their jobs particularly in the manufacturing sector. In some countries, the front desk jobs are taken over by robots. They provide information, enable check-in and check-out services, etc. Likewise, robots are being utilised to perform dirty, dangerous and repetitive works. Though it is good in one way, this has led to unemployment of the lower workforce.

There is general apathy that in future most of the tasks of the humans will be managing, advising, decision-making, reasoning and interacting. Instead of white or blue collar jobs, they will have to fill green-economy jobs with roles with artificial intelligence, cloud computing, etc. So, the present work force has to revamp their skill sets. Of late, there is the entry of another product called ChatGPT from Open AI, a U S firm. It uses artificial intelligence to generate content from some simple prompts leaving even the Information Technology workforce at stake.

In this situation, the question 'is it ethical to replace human workers with automation' becomes a million-dollar question. Instead of worrying about this, humans should focus their attention on how to master the skill in operating the new found inventions, how to use it more creatively. There is a saying "One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of an extraordinary man". Considering the advantages of automation that includes higher production, more efficient use of material, better product quality, improvement in safety, less labour and increased factory time, it is good that humans adapt to technology. Humans have evolved from the primitive stage to sophisticated age. The disadvantage maybe, due to heavy automation, humans may become slaves to machines which can endanger civilization. Other than that, if automation is handled with caution and with wisdom, it can lead to a great future. So, replacement of human workers with automation should be taken in the right perspective and should not be considered as unethical.

EXAMPLE 2:

Technology has been more beneficial than a drawback. Write an essay in about 200 words substantiating your view point.

Technology, as we all know, is the different scientific techniques adopted by man in order to fulfil man's needs and aspirations to make life more comfortable. In my opinion technology has been more beneficial than a drawback.

The planet, earth, is moving forward in leaps and bounds due to the rapid developments taking place in all strata of life. First, let us look into the boon of technology. It has made life easier. People need not labour endlessly to accomplish their requirements. It has pervaded all areas - domestic, transportation, industry, communication, medicine etc. Housewives need not sweat their life - as all work can be done at the touch of buttons. Everything is computerized and it has made data collection, storage and retrieval of information easier. The advances in transportation and communication make us to long for things in other planets also. Mechanization in the industrial sector produces things at a rapid pace. The advent of telemedicine is a great boon to patients living even in remote areas as they are able to get advice from expert doctors without moving about. These advancements in technology, on one hand, seem to have brought happiness and prosperity.

But, on the other hand, these developments are leading the world to devastation, destruction and disaster. The first major cause is the excessive exploitation of our environment. Industrialization and urbanisation, in addition to over usage of fossil fuels, have led to environmental degradation. These days, one hears of diseases not heard of before. In the communication sector, cyber crimes, spam, etc. are on the prowl. There is unemployment and young minds are living an idle and lazy life. Many of them become couch-potatoes, just watching all ghastly scenes on the T.V. Face-to-face contact even with the near and dear has become a rare feat. Humanitarianism is lost. There is stress and tension in all human beings. There is no peace with any country and any person as everyone wants to have power. A wide chasm has been formed among the human kind i.e., the rich and the poor divide. Only the rich find the advancements in technology affordable.

In short, every development has two sides. Technology is also a twin-edged sword. So everybody should take the development in the right perspective. One should know to sift between good and evil and adopt the positive aspect so that our world can be made a haven. When this happens, technological developments will be more beneficial and will outdo the drawbacks.

EXAMPLE 3:

Internet and T.V. erode our values - Discuss in about 300 words.

With the advent of electronic revolution T.V. and Internet have pervaded all strata of society. People have become couch potatoes watching action only on TV. The satelite channels have mesmerised people of all ages and levels. With the violence and horror and stories far from ground realities these satelite channels serve as social criminals. These programmes corrupt the mind of the people, especially the younger generation. As a result of this our culture and values are in danger. Internet is another media for concern. The invasion of internet is playing havoc on the social and domestic development in children. Though there are many useful applications of internel which has made communication easier and cheaper, it has a lot of adverse effects also, particularly on the younger generation. Children develop "electronic friendship' with computer, instead of with their parents and elders. Consequently, they lose touch with the values and traditions which we have preserved for generations. As they do not spend time on outdoor games and social interaction, they lack any outlet for their physical activity. As a result, there is increase in crimes and anti-social activities in the society. As there is no censor for TV and Internet, Children are vulnerable to these media villains in our drawing room. It is high time for the parents and elderes to take urgent measures to inculcate our traditional values among our children for a better future.

Should Students become entrepreneurs? Substantiate your views in a paragraph not exceeding 200 words.

There are two sides to this debate. One view is, that an entrepreneurs must posses certain personality traits like vision, passion and drive that is in born and cannot be taught. Others argue that the drills of evaluating opportunities, motivating people and operating a business can be easily passed to eager students looking to be entrepreneurs. The truth both side are right, some may be natural entrepreneurs and immediately open a business, while other study and train long and hard before becoming one. So according to Bottom and Thompson entrepreneurs is a person who habitually creates and innovates to build something of recognisable value around perreinel opportunitis".

Where in entrepreneurs are born or made they typically show higher level of risk tolerance and ability to cope with ambiguity. They should have the capacity to make connection between apparently unrealated events and link that into business. They should be optimistic and creative in finding resources and solution to problems. They should be highly self confident and have a strong belief in their own motivation and abilities. As Peter Druncker said "Entrepreneurship is a discipline and it can be learned. To become a successful entrepreneurs, there should a right environmental with a strong motivation. Then youngsters should grab the opportunity and can become successful entrepreneurs.

EXAMPLE 5:

Write an essay on the topic "Internet: A Curse or a Blessing" (500 words).

The internet is a computer based global information system. It is composed of many interconnected computer networks. Each network may link thousands of computers enabling them to share information. The internet has brought a transformation in many aspects of life. It is one of the biggest contributors in making the world into a global village. In the beginning, the internet was developed only for military purpose. Later, it was privatized and commercialized.

At present, the internet is being used for diverse purposes. The first and foremost usage is, apart from making the world a global village, it is a source of information. For instance, by accessing the encyclopedia and the various web pages, one can get a junk of information on any topic in a few minutes from any part of the world. Now, it is acting as a good media to have association with like-minded people through blogs and communities. This sharing platform is of immense use to professionals. It serves as a resource of entertainment particularly for youngsters who love to watch movies and download the latest hits. For the busy people, who don't find time to do shopping, e-shopping is serving as a boon. Some companies use this as a medium to advertise their products and sell the products through online shopping. E-banking, e-commerce, e-learning are some of the other uses of the internet. Internet users should be wise to block unnecessary sites and should know the netiquette to be adopted while using the net. If this mentality is developed, then the internet will be a real boon to one and all.

Having said about the benefits, are there disadvantages attached to this mass attraction media? It has caused some evil spell on youngsters and children. Many of them prefer to sit before their system browsing or chatting with friends or playing computer games, than spending time with family members. As a result, many family values and traditions are long lost. Also, physical activities are very much limited leading to obesity and diseases associated with this. Over exposure to electro-magnetic radiation is not good for overall health. Reading habit has gone to the back burner. Yet, another drawback, internet is depriving youngsters of their creativity. Once an assignment is given, they simply download the material and submit. As students and youngsters are vulnerable to internet addiction, great caution should be taken in preventing the harm afflicting them.

EXPLANATION

When writing argumentative essays, the following points are very important:

• Specify your view point clearly-Thesis statement.

• Give appropriate examples, at least two strong evidences to support your statement.

• Explain clearly why the counterargument is incorrect.

• Give a short and appropriate conclusion reflecting your view point.
