An essay is usually divided into paragraphs. A paragraph may be a single sentence or a group of sentences revolving around a central idea found in the topic sentence. This topic sentence will be substantiated by supporting sentences. So a paragraph can be defined as a unit of composition in which one idea or thought is developed by means of examples or supporting details. Usually the introductory paragraph of an essay will contain the thesis statement and the subsequent paragraphs will be supporting paragraphs; The last paragraph will close the essay by summing up.

A paragraph should be developed by using the supplementary details in a logical order so that there is coherence in thought. It should follow the chronological order or space order or proceed from general to particular, or particular to general and climax. Transition words like, 'and', in addition', ‘more over', 'next', ‘also', 'but', 'however', 'meanwhile', 'finally', 'for example', 'for instance', 'therefore', 'thus', 'then', 'consequently' etc., are used to mark addition, contrast, result which help us to carry the flow of thought from one sentence to the next or from one paragraph to the next,

EXAMPLE 1:

Success story of India in Information Technology

It is evident that development in technology in many areas has made life more comfortable. Technology is used to improve efficiency, communicate better and make better products. In particular, the perpetual goal in Information Technology, is mind boggling. Though the availability of skilled personnel is lagging, Information Technology is spreading its areas like an octopus in all fields.

Let us take the medical field in India. Now, medical tourism has become an important, activity in India. How and why? First thing, the developments in modern investigating technologies such as MRI and ECG are astonishing. Telemedicine, a development of IT, is covering a wide range of activities. In India, as distribution of specialists, lopsided, the excellent telecommunications, infrastructure and video conferencing equipment are a boon. Also, with software, hardware, brainware and a large number of doctors available licensed to practice abroad, India could offer global telemedicine at reduced rates. Sophisticated medical transcription facility is another area in which IT is flourishing. IT has also helped in the development of smart shirts which helps one monitor a wearer's movement, heart rate and respiration rate at real time through nano technology.

India is known for its BPO's and KPO's - % Business Process Outsourcing and Knowledge Process Outsourcing. Many of the multinationals having their root in foreign countries, get most of their work done online or offline from Indian professionals because of, the cheap labour. It helps companies save precious time and resource. At the same time, call centres are likely to generate employment to a number of youngsters, KPO's enable knowledge management in industries. Sharing of knowledge and information has been made possible through digital network. Geographical barriers and time zones are not obstacles to access developments. Here also video and teleconferencing play a vital role. Thus, internet connectivity has brought the world into a close circuit.

India is a pioneer in the development of super computer, Artificial Intelligence, etc. All these have led to increasing financial prosperity, resulting in rise in real estate, commodities etc. IT in India has made the rich, richer... but the poor are remaining the same. If all Indians surmount this knowledge barrier, India will become a developed country.

EXAMPLE 2

Write an essay on Space Research in about 300 words.

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for man kind...," said Neil Armstrong as he took his first steps onto the surface of the moon. Humans have had tremendous curiosity about space since the beginning of time. People have been venturing out into the universe for many years now. In addition to satellites, both women and men astronauts have travelled into space to collect data about the universe. The first human being, the first animal, and the first spacecraft in orbit, were all achievements of the Soviet Union.

The space age began only when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik. It was the first of its kind to orbit the earth, therefore winning the space race in favor of the soviets. Space Exploration had a significant and lasting impact on the development of the United States of America because it pioneered new technol- ogy, advanced the United States in the space race, and expanded the space program. In 1958 a group known as The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was founded. The first probe to escape Earth's gravity was the Soviet LUNA 1, launched on Jan. 2, 1959. It passed the Moon and continued into interplanetary space. The U.S. probe Pioneer 4, launched two months later, followed the same path. Later Soviet probes either hit the Moon or passed it and took photographs of the hidden far side, relaying them back to Earth.

The first man to travel to space was Yuri Gagarin, History was made on April 12, 1961, when he successfully orbited the earth in the Votsok 1. His flight lasted one hour and 48 minutes and as he circled the earth, his speed was about 17,000mph on the Votsok 1. Following this mission, Gagarin was killed ina test airplane crash.

Neil Armstrong was the first person to ever land on the moon. Born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, he graduated from college in 1955 and joined the NASA team. In 1962, he became the first civilian to enter into an astronaut training program. In 1969, Armstrong headed the Apollo 11 mission, becoming the first human being to set foot on the moon. Other astronauts the accompanied Armstrong on this mission were Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., and Michael Collins. In 1971, Armstrong became a professor of aerospace engineer- ing at the University of Cincinnati.

Valentina Vladimora Nikolayeva Tereshkova was the first woman to enter into space. She joined a Soviet training program in the year 1961 and two years later she successfully orbited the earth 48 times in the Votsok 6.

The Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite to orbit the earth. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were both spacecrafts that were launched in 1977 to Jupiter. The international space station, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the DNanlyzer have all enhanced our research, and space exploration has also improved our quality of life and created jobs for Americans. India's 'Chandraayan' to Moon is another milestone in space research. In the years to come, NASA will continue to launch new satellites and explore the great unknown. Some of these satellites will be so big that they'll have to be assembled in outer space. There are still lots more to discover. While the cost of continued space exploration is a controversial issue, our past explorations have had a lasting impact on humankind. Continuing such exploration is vi3tal not only to the advancement of society, but to our very existence as well.

EXAMPLE 3

India in 2020- How do you envisage India as a developed nation with self sufficiency in resources, power and technology?

India is one of the most populated countries in the world. It is believed, that by the middle of the 21st century, India will have surpassed China in terms of the number of inhabitants. Inspite of India having diverse social issues such as dialact barriers, gender, inequality, levels of poverty rates and severely polluted areas. India is believed to be the world's second fastest growing economy, closly behind the US and Republic of China. India is still striving to become a developed nation and the key to its development lies in its agricultural economy. Though measures have been taken to achieve the dream of equitable growth, the gap between the rural and urban India still exists.

To reduce the gap between the Rural and Urban India, the growth of rural people is needed. the most important component for this growth is infrastructure development. India being a predominantly agricultural economy, the infrastructure development centering agriculture will play a crucial role in the country's development. Communication plays a vital role in this development. The rural India does not have proper access to information. Lack of proper education has incapacitated them to understand the power of information. Underutilisation of this powerful source is an impediment for the gap. So the introduction of 'Education for all' is the first step taken by our Government for the country's development. It is to be realised the whole primary education is fundamental to the nation, higher education determines its economic and technological progress in the globalised system. If this is accomplished then only, India will become self sufficient in resources, power and technology.

Every Citizen of India is dreaming to see India as a developed country by 2020. One feels sad to still see beggers on the streets, broken roads and pavements and shabby slums. Despite these, India will emerge as a superpower in 2020.

This will enable all levels and section of the population in India to march forward towards a more secure and prosperous future. The increasing congested urban traffic will lead to the development of city roads and rural highways. This congestion will accelerate the movement of business, government offices, etc into centres. The once suburbs will have skyscrapers and sophistication.

But environmental issues will remain a serious cause for concern. Air pollution and shortage of potable water will be major concerns. Efforts to popularise water harvesting, district enforcement of vehicle emission standards and usage of alternate sources of energy from sun, wind, biomass etc. will be adopted. once these come into existance, India will become a global economy and will be a major player in trade, technology and investment. In addition the rich cultural heritage and years of history of civilization will make India emerge as a super power by 2020.
