PARAPHRASING

EXPLANATION

Paraphrasing is restating a concept or idea in one's own words without distorting the original meaning. When a sentence or passage is paraphrased, the listener or the reader should be able to understand the content easily.

Eg. "The weather is freezing and dreary" can be rephrased using simple terms like

"The weather is cold and dull".

"The exponential growth of technology is witnessed in the galloping evolution in communication" can be rephrased as "The rapid growth in communication can be credited to technology".

Steps for paraphrasing effectively

Paraphrasing is a process that involves the following steps:

• Read the content intended for paraphrasing and understand the thought process.

• Write in your own words without looking at the original content.

• Check your content with the original text to check whether all the important points are included in the paraphrase.

• Then modify, revise or retain, as required.

The 4R's of paraphrasing are: Read, Reword, Recheck and Reconsider

• While paraphrasing, care should be taken to avoid plagiarism.

• The purpose of paraphrasing should be putting together the material read from various relevant sources in your own words and style and make it easy for reading.

• The paraphrased material should be duly acknowledged.

Paraphrase the following passages:

1. Learning is a process that every single human being undergoes. It is not just a yearly or even monthly process, but a day-today one as well. We observe people around us-how they speak and act. In learning about others, we learn about ourselves in the bargain, and also how it is best to interact with other people. We learn the true meaning of terms such as integrity, kindness, sincerity, dedication, love, acceptance, appreciation, humility and encouragement only from honest actions. Not just from words.

2. Three great challenges dominate the scene as one contemplates the global environmental campaigning in the first few decades of the 21st century. First, there is huge legacy of industrial Grow pollution which is not being responded to, second, societies can live and work cleanly and zogs sensitively but the means to do so are neglected.
