EXAMPLE 1:

Write a set of eight recommendations to parents to protect their children online

1. Young children should be monitored at all times when accessing the internet.

2. Rules can be set by the parents for the time duration online and the sites they can visit.

3. The children should be made to understand that the parents can have access to their phone or tablets anytime and they can monitor them.

4. Before allowing to use the net, it is necessary to teach the basic rules about the appropriate sites that can be visited and the risks involved in visiting mal sites.

5. Children should be advised not to accept friend requests from strangers.

6. Children should be discouraged from posting the location, date of birth and other too much private details.

7. Children should be taught to block strangers and report to parents when bullies try to abuse or harass them.

8. Filters should be installed in their devices to aid prevention of misuse.

EXAMPLE 2:

a) Recommendations to keep the city of Chennai clean and green.

1. Planting of saplings, wherever possible, should be encouraged.

2. Cutting of trees, in the name of development should be severely punished.

3. Renewable sources of energy need to be used for transportation, for industrial and domestic purposes.

4. The vehicles must be maintained properly and emission testings must be compulsorily done for all the vehicles.

5. Waste segregation at source should be promoted and biodegradeable and non-biodegradeable wastes should be treated appropriately.

6. More number of dust bins can be placed in all the public places to curb the sprawling litter and people can be penalised for throwing the waste outside.

7. Awareness programmes can be conducted to make the public realise the importance of cleanliness.

8. Stringent punishment should be imposed on those who violate the rules and spoil the serenity of the place.

EXAMPLE 3:

b) Recommendations to maintain your computer in good working condition.

1. A corner of a larger room or a small room should be allotted to install your PC.

2. The area selected should have adequate space and several main sockets for connecting accessories.

3. The PC should be placed on a proper computer desk, with a sliding shelf for the keyboard.

4. An adjustable chair, which enables good posture and support for PC users should be used. The feet should comfortably rest on the ground.

5. The monitor should be positioned to avoid reflections,

6. The keyboard should be within easy reach that the hands and wrists are on level surface.

7. The mouse should be placed at the right place to minimise arm movements. Mouse mats should be used to avoid friction.

8. Software as per requirement can be installed in your system to enable workability. Using pirated CD's should be avoided.

9. After using your PC, all programs should be closed and system should be 'Shut down'.

10. The system should be covered when not in use and kept dust free.

EXAMPLE 4

Write a set of eight recommendations to preserve our water resources.

Recommendations to preserve our water resources:

(i) Encroachments near the water resources should be removed.

(ii) Construction near or on the water resources should be banned.

(iii) Desilting must be done periodically

(iv) Sand mining should be prohibited.

(v) Stringent punishment should be given to those who indulge in illegal sand mining.

(vi) Industrial sewage should not be allowed to enter the waterways.

(vii) Untreated sewage should not be let into the water bodies.

(viii) Awareness Programmes have to be conducted on the importance of conserving our water resources.

EXAMPLE 5

Recommendations to reduce unemployment problem.

(i) The government can increase the number of technical training institutes.

(ii) Loans can be given to encourage self-employment

(iii) Entrepreneurship courses can be introduced in the school and college curriculum.

(iv) Subsidies can be given to encourage the entrepreneurs.

(v) More industries can be started in rural and suburban areas.

(vi) Private sectors can be encouraged to generate employment.

(vii) The government should ensure employment to at least one person in a family.

(viii) Unemployed graduates can be employed for additional government duties like election duties.

EXPLANATION

While giving recommendations, the passive forms of modal auxiliaries should be used. For example: can be, must be, should be, ought to be, need to be/ + past participle of the Verb.

EXERCISE

1. Assume that you are the Chairman of Students Council in your college. You have received a copy of the Anti-Ragging Act from your Principal. Write a set of Eight recommendations to your fellowmates not to indulge in ragging.

2. Write a list of eight recommendations for improving health services in Government Hospitals.

3. Write a set of eight recommendations to avoid wastage of water in public places. You may also include recommendations as to how to use water carefully.

4. Write down any ten recommendations for reducing global warming.

5. The mosquite menance has increased nowadays and diseases like dengue and malaria are spreading. Write a set of eight recommendations to fight these problems.

6. Write a set of eight recommendations to prevent accidents in a chemical factory.
