A galvanic series is a chart (or) list that orders metals and alloys based on their oxidation potential (activity) in a particular environment (seawater (or) soil)
GALVANIC SERIES
Oxidation potential of
various metals and alloys are measured by immersing them in sea water using
standard calomel electrode as the reference electrode. These values are
arranged in decreasing order of thier activity and this series is known as the
galvanic series.

Definition
A galvanic series is a
chart (or) list that orders metals and alloys based on their oxidation
potential (activity) in a particular environment (seawater (or) soil)
The more active (anodic)
metal, located top in the galvanic series, acts as the anode and corrodes,
while the more noble (cathodic) metal, bottom in the series acts as cathode and
is protected.
The larger the gap
between the two metals in the series, the greater the potential difference and
the more severe the galvanic corrosion of the less noble metal.
Applications of
galvanic series
1. It is used to
prevent galvanic corrosion.
2. Engineers use the
series to select materials that are close to each other to minimize corrosion.
3. It is used to
prevent corrosion of ship hulls and other metallic components.
4. To prevent leaks
caused by the corrosion of dissimilar pipes like copper and steel.
5. To prevent
discoloration and damage, when different metals are used in the construction of
the statue (made of copper and iron).
6. It is used to select
the coatings, which act as a barrier.
