TRANSMISSION
SYSTEM
The transmission of
electrical energy forms a very important part of power system. The electric
power produced at the power station is transmitted over large distance to load
centers with the help of conductors known as transmission lines.
The main components of
a transmission lines. The main components of a transmission lines are
1. Conductors
2. Insulators and
3. Supports.
The conductors carry
electric power from the power station to load centers. Conductors for high
voltage overhead lines are always bar, we generally use steel‒reinforced
aluminium conductors (ACSR) for this purpose.
Insulators are used to
isolate the conductors at higher potential from the ground. Insulators are
usually made of porcelain but glass and other synthetic insulating materials
are also used. For mechanical stand point, the insulators must be strong enough
to resist the pull due to weight of the conductors.
Supports may be RCC
poles, MS tubular poles or towers. These are used to keep the conductors at a
proper height from the ground. For very high voltage lines, we always use steel
towers made of galvanised angle‒iron, bolted together. The cross arms, which
are attached to the poles or towers and are used to support the conductors.
4. Miscellaneous items
like lighting arresters, circuit breakers, ground wires, stay wires etc.
