Inner Product Spaces: Unit vector, Orthogonal, Orthonormal - Definitions
Definitions
Unit vector:
Let V be an inner product space and a vector x ∈ V is called a unit vector if || x || =
1.
Orthogonal:
Let V be an inner product space & let x, y ∈ V, x and y are said to be orthogonal
(perpendicular) if <x, y> = 0. A subset S of V is orthogonal if any two
distinct vectors in S are orthogonal.
Orthonormal:
Let V be an inner product space. A subset of V is an orthonormal basis for V if
it is an ordered basis that is orthonormal.
(ie)
A subset S of V is orthonormal, if S is orthogonal & consists entirely of
unit vectors.
