Dear Sir

Sub: Incomplete storm water drains - reg.

I am a resident of the area mentioned above. I wish to draw the attention of Greater Chennai Corporation authorities to the pathetic condition of our road after they started the storm water drain work.

The work of constructing the storm water drain done by the Corporation throughout the Chennai limit is really a laudable one. But, like in our area, in many areas the completion work is not to the satisfaction of the citizens who have to use the roads frequently. Debris and rubble are lying scattered here and there. There are small children, office goers and senior citizens using the road. Many a time, there is a chance of a fall due to the unlevel road after the drainage work.

I request the GCC authorities to look into the matter and do the rectification work as soon as possible. I would like to give the following suggestions:

1. When the work is deputed to Contractors, an officer from the Corporation should also be deputed to supervise the work.

2. Instruction should be given to remove debris as and when the work is over.

3. Immediate action should be taken if people fail in their duties.

I sincerely hope that the authorities rectify the problem at the earliest.

Sub: Suffering of office goers and school children

I, as a regular commuter in our city buses, would like to highlight the problems faced by the public in your esteemed newspaper.

The peak hour traffic is awesome. Many people have to travel to various destinations to reach their work place or educational institution. They flock to the bus stops well ahead in the morning. But even at terminals, commuters are flabbergasted to find the bus that will be starting first. So they run helter-skelter to find the bus.

After getting into the bus, the small children who board the bus, find it difficult to pass their bus-pass to the conductor due to the crowd. Sometimes, they are forced to hang at the footboards causing peril to their lives.

Another problem is rash driving by drivers. The government bus drivers think that they are the rulers of the road and try to overtake and skip signals. Those who use the public transport have to tolerate all these. I, as an affected commuter, would like to give a few solutions.

i) At terminals, authorities should display the arrival and departure timing of the buses.

ii) During peak hours, more number of buses should be plied, particularly to school zones.

iii) Stringent action should be taken on those drivers who drive rashly and cause accidents.

I hope that the transport authorities realise the seriousness of the problem and do the needful at the earliest.

Sir,

I would like to bring through the columns of your esteemed daily the ever increasing dangers of air pollution in our city.

The ambient air quality in our city is causing alarm. The total suspended particulate matter is found to be very high compared to the respirable suspended particle matter which is 51 mcg/cm, especially in commercial and industrial areas like T.Nagar, Avadi, Ambattur, Taramani etc. It is a scientifically proven fact that air pollution has a variety of effects on human health and well-being. Headaches, respiratory problems, colds, changes in blood pressure and other cardio-vascular changes and even cancer are some of the adverse effects. of air pollution.

In addition to industrial pollution and vehicular pollution, air pollution is also caused by construction works. Huge bulldozers, whining cutting machines, demolition of huge structures and digging activity undertaken by the government and private, raise clouds of dust that settle on the vegetation around, not only killing the houseplants altogether, but also spoiling the safe and healthy environment.

A few suggestions to improve the deteriorating quality of air are:

1. Use of public transport systems should be encouraged rather than private vehicles.

2. Alternative sources of energy should be used.

3. Vehicles must be periodically serviced and checked for emission levels.

4. Strict action must be taken on those who use adulterated vehicle fuel.

Unless citizens' awareness is raised, laws enforced strictly, and concerted action. taken to improve the quality of air, we stand to lose heavily.
