Separately Excited DC Generators

In this type of generator, the field winding is excited by a separate DC supply.

SEPARATELY EXCITED DC GENERATORS

 

In this type of generator, the field winding is excited by a separate DC supply. The electrical equivalent circuit of a separately excited d.c generator is shown in Fig. 2.13.


The field winding is connected to a separate DC source. The load is connected across the armature terminals.

 

Terminal Markings

• Z, ZZ‒Shunt field winding Terminals

• Y, YY‒Series field winding Terminals

• A, AA‒Armature Terminals

Let Ra, Rsh and Rse = resistance of armature, shunt field and series field windings respectively

Ia, Ish and Ise = current through the armature, shunt field, and series field windings respectively.

IL = Load current

V, Vsh = Voltage across the load or terminal voltage of the generator and voltage across the shunt field winding respectively.

Vb, Var = voltage drop due to brush contact resistance, voltage drop due to armature reaction respectively.

Eg = emf generated on no‒load condition.

Ia = IL= Current equation

Eg = V + IaRa + Vb + Var = voltage equation

Vb =2 × drop due to each brush contact.

If Vb and Var negligible, then

Eg = V + IaRa
