Types of DC Motors

The DC motors are classified into three types based on the field winding connection with the armature 1. DC Shunt Motor 2. DC Series Motor 3. DC Compound Motor (i) Long shunt compound motor (ii) Short shunt compound motor

TYPES OF DC MOTORS

 

The DC motors are classified into three types based on the field winding connection with the armature

1. DC Shunt Motor

2. DC Series Motor

3. DC Compound Motor

(i) Long shunt compound motor

(ii) Short shunt compound motor

 

1. DC Shunt Motor

In DC shunt motor, the field winding is connected in parallel with the armature as shown in Fig. 2.31. The field winding has a large number of turns and relatively smaller cross sectional area. Therefore the shunt field winding have high resistance and hence shunt field current is relatively small compared with armature current.


The relationship between V, Eb and la is given below

 V = Eb+ laRa

 Ia = IL ‒ Ish

 Ish = V / Rsh

 

2. DC Series Motor

In DC series motor, the field winding is connected in series with the armature as shown in Fig. 2.32. The series field winding carries the input current. (IL=Ia+Ise). The series field winding has a relatively small number of turns of thick wire and, therefore will posses a low resistance.

The relationship between V, Eb and Ia is given below.


 V = Eb + IaRa + IaRse

V = Eb + Ia(Ra + Rse)

V = Supply Voltage

IL = Ia = Armature current

Rse = Resistance of series field

Ra = Resistance of Armature

Eb = Back emf induced

 

3. DC Compound Motor

In compound motors, both series field and shunt field windings are connected with the armature.

1. Short Shunt Compound Motor

In short shunt compound motor, the series field winding is connected in series with the parallel combination of armature and shunt field winding.


The relationship between V, Eb and Ia is given by,

V = Eb + ILRse + IaRa

Vsh = V ‒ ILRse

Ise = IL

IL = Ia + Ish

 Ish = Vsh / Rsh

2. Long shunt compound motor

In long shunt compound motor, the shunt field winding is connected in parallel with the series combination of series field winding and armature.

The relationship between V, Eb and Ia is given below:


V = Eb + Ia(Ra+Rse)

Ia = Ise

IL = la + Ish
