Comparison of various types of Instruments

The following table gives the comparison between PMMC, moving iron and electro dynamometer type instrument.


 

Comparison between Ammeter and Voltmeter


Ammeter

1. It is a current measuring device which measures current through circuit.

2. Always connected in series with circuit.

3. Power loss is given by I2Ra were Ra is ammeter resistance.

4. For low power loss, Ra must be low,

Voltmeter

1. It is a voltage measuring device which measures potential difference between any two points of a circuit.

2. Always connected in parallel with the circuit.

3. Power loss is given by V2/Rv where Rv is voltmeter resistance.

4. For low power loss, Ra must be as high as possible.

5. Deflecting torque is produced by a current which is proportional to the voltage to be measured.
