Comparison of various types of Instruments

The following table gives the comparison between PMMC, moving iron and electro dynamometer type instrument.

Comparison between Ammeter and Voltmeter

Ammeter

1. It is a current measuring device which measures current through circuit.

2. Always connected in series with circuit.

3. Power loss is given by I²R_a were R_a is ammeter resistance.

4. For low power loss, R_a must be low,

5. Deflecting torque is produced by current to the voltage to be measured directly.

Voltmeter

1. It is a voltage measuring device which measures potential difference between any two points of a circuit.

2. Always connected in parallel with the circuit.

3. Power loss is given by V²/R_v where R_v is voltmeter resistance.

4. For low power loss, R_a must be as high as possible.

5. Deflecting torque is produced by a current which is proportional to the voltage to be measured.
