Definition of Linear Combination

LINEAR COMBINATION

Definition:

Let V be a vector space and S be a non−empty subset of V. A vector V∈V is called a linear combination of vectors of S if there exists a finite number of vectors v₁, v₂, ... v_n in S and scalars a₁, a₂, ... a_n in F such that

v = a₁v₁ + a₂v₂ + ... + a_nv_n

Note

In any vector space V, 0v=0 for each v ∈ V. Thus a zero vector is a linear combination of any non−empty subset of V.
