Three‒phase induction
motor is the most popular type of AC motor. It is most widely used for
industrial drives since it is cheap, robust, efficient and reliable. They run
essentially at constant speed from no‒load to full‒load. It has good speed
regulation and high starting torque. It requires little maintenance. It has
reasonable overload capacity. It has the following advantages and also some
disadvantages.
Advantages
• It has simple, rugged
and almost unbreakable construction.
• Its cost is low and
it is very reliable.
• It has sufficiently
high efficiency.
• It has a reasonably
good power factor
• It requires little
maintenance
• It has self‒starting
torque.
Disadvantages
• It is essentially a
constant speed motor and its speed cannot be varied easily.
• Its starting torque
is inferior to DC shunt motor.
