CHAPTER - 5

INDUCTION MOTORS

INTRODUCTION

An electric motor is a machine which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. Its action is based on the Faraday's principle that when a current‒carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it experiences a mechanical force. In DC motors, the electrical power is conducted directly to the rotating part of the machine through carbon brushes and commutator segments. Therefore the DC motor generally is called as "conduction motors". However, in AC motors the rotating part does not receive electric power by conduction but by induction [it receive the electric power from the stator]. That is why such motors are known as "Induction motors". Infact, an induction motor can be treated as a "rotating transformer" i.e., one in which primary winding is stationary but stationary but the secondary is free to rotate.

Of all the AC motors, the 3‒ϕ induction motor is the one which is extensively used for various kinds of industrial drives. In this chapter we discuss about three phase induction motors and single phase induction motor.

THREE PHASE INDUCTION MOTORS

Three‒phase induction motor is the most popular type of AC motor. It is most widely used for industrial drives since it is cheap, robust, efficient and reliable. They run essentially at constant speed from no‒load to full‒load. It has good speed regulation and high starting torque. It requires little maintenance. It has reasonable overload capacity.
