Properties of standing waves

In general the standing wave can be represented by a sine curve and it reduces to a straight line twice in each time period.

PROPERTIES OF STANDING WAVES

 

1) In general the standing wave can be represented by a sine curve and it reduces to a straight line twice in each time period.

 

2) All the particles except at nodes will have simple harmonic motion.

 

3) The Amptitude gradually increases from zero (at node) to a maximum (at antinode).

 

4) The distance between any consecutive nodes (or) antinodes is equal to λ/2 and the distance between node and an antinode is λ/4.

 

5) Velocity and acceleration of all the particles of wavelength λ are same at any instant of time.
