Lasers are classified into five major categories based on the type of active medium.

(i) Solid state laser
It
is classified into two types
(a)
3 level laser (e.g) Ruby laser
(b)
4 level laser (e.g) Nd‒YAG laser
(ii) Gas Lasers
Examples:
CO2 laser, He‒Ne laser.
(iii) Semi conductor
laser
Example:
GaAs (Gallium Arsenide laser)
(iv) Liquid lasers
Example:
Europium benzoyl acetonate dissolved in alcohol.
(v) Dye laser and chemical
lasers
Example:
Rhodamine ‒ 6G (or) Xanthene Dye laser.
