Basic Electronics and Electrical Engineering: Chapter 4: Synchronous Machines

Basic Principle of Synchronous Machines

An Alternator operates on the same fundamental principle of electromagnetic induction as a DC generators i.e., whenever a conductor cuts the magnetic flux, dynamically induced emf is produced in it according to Faraday's Laws of Electromagnetic induction.

CHAPTER 4

SYNCHRONOUS MACHINES

INTRODUCTION

AC generators or Alternators operate on the same fundamental principles of electromagnetic induction as DC generators. But there is one important difference between two whereas in DC generators, the armature rotates and the field system is stationary, the arrangement in alternators is just the reverse of it. In alternators, standard construction consists of armature winding mounted on a stationary element called stator and field winding mounted on a rotating element called rotor. The machine which produces 3‒phase power from mechanical power is called an alternator or synchronous generator. In this chapter, we shall discuss the construction and characteristic of alternators.

BASIC PRINCIPLE

An Alternator operates on the same fundamental principle of electromagnetic induction as a DC generators i.e., whenever a conductor cuts the magnetic flux, dynamically induced emf is produced in it according to Faraday's Laws of Electromagnetic induction.
