Synchronous Machines: Distribution Factor (Kd) of an Alternator
DISTRIBUTION
FACTOR (Kd) OF AN ALTERNATOR
Distribution factor, Kd
= emf with distributed winding / emf
with concentrated winding

Kd = (sin m
β/2) / (m sin β/2)
Where,
m = No. of
slots/phase/pole
β = (180°) / ( No. of
slots/pole)
Since the conductors
are spread over the surface of the armature in slots, their emfs differ in
phase and the total emf is the vector sum.
Hence, Kd = 1
for concentrated winding but it is less than 1 for distributed winding.
