Synchronous Machines

The following are the procedure for conducting the load test on 3ϕ Alternator.

 

LOAD CHARACTERISTICS OF ALTERNATOR

 

The following are the procedure for conducting the load test on 3ϕ Alternator.

1. Initially DPST and TPST switches are kept open.

2. The generator is driven by its prime mover at its rated speed.

3. By closing the DPST switch, DC supply is given to field winding.

4. By varying the field rheostat the rated line voltage across machine terminals at no load condition is obtained.

5. By closing TPST switch, 3ϕ‒star connected load is connected to alternator.

6. Now current, IL flows through the load and it is noted.

7. The change in terminal voltage plotted with respect to change in load current is called the load characteristics of an alternator

8. The characteristics curves are drawn between load current and load voltage.

9. The percentage regulation is obtained from the formula (E0‒VL)VL × 100
